A heart surgeon friend once confirmed to me that the human heart, when in trouble, attempts to heal itself.
In fact when faced with arteries which are blocked or no longer working, it simply grows new ones to bypass the non functioning ones.
This may be simply a metaphor to our own condition. When our hearts break, how does our body/heart react to emotional distress? Actual science tells us when we endure broken hearts our physical hearts suffer similar symptoms of an actual heart attack. Does this medical condition have an emotional analogy?
I have heard the 3 legged stool analogy. Emotional, Physical and Spiritual. When the emotional leg of a 3 legged stool gets damaged/cut off, to achieve balance you lean hard into the other two. In this case, work harder physically and excercise. Also spend more time on the spiritual aspects, your inner man and go deeper spiritually.
A well respected psychologist friend told me that the mind gets scared when the heart hurts. It fears for survival and concerned of potential suicidal tendencies. So the mind seeks quick fixes for comfort which many times include alcohol, drugs, pornography, poor habits, and quick rebound fixes. Anything to distract the heart in an attempt for survival. These, many times are bandaids and don't lead to real healing. However the best and most safe solution is to actually grieve. Allow your heart to be sad until it heals. There's no time limit or standard. From that healing we all learn lessons about ourselves and life. During the grieving, be kind to yourself, laugh well, and often with the support of your friends.
I am personally on the other end of an extended grieving period and I would have to say green spring growth will have more meaning this year to me. I have placed things which no longer have value behind me and I am marching forward now, a step at a time. I have heard it said, you cannot belly laugh until you have learned to weep. I have done both. A counselor friend told me you cannot create in a time of extreme dark emotion. Creativity does not do well in a time of deep stress... or fear. But once we have navigated through those emotions and grieved well we are free to create, and perhaps show the way to others who are still struggling. An art professor jokingly told us art students we were mostly all broken. He said it was the irritated/wounded oysters which emit the substance that creates pearls. Yes, the deeply wounded see and feel things differently. Father God, thank you for the dark season which you have walked me through Please help me use these mental pictures as seeds for creativity in the years to come.
