Elizabeth in Winter was done mid autumn as a favor for a very dear friend. It was taken from an old black and white photo and it portrays her grandmother, Elizabeth, as a younger woman walking with her dog in the winter. It was done in monochromatic black and white acrylic which I still do from time to time. It's a moment frozen in time perhaps like memories etched in our minds. Some of those memories are very good, and some are forgettable. I look at this painting now with all its flaws and imperfections, yet I am told it is treasured and hangs on her wall to this day. Some people come and go in our lives, but real friends continue on. Like the brushwork of this painting, we all have flaws and imperfections. And, we present these to our closest friends and family who know us the best. Still, they overlook those and care for and love us anyway. Perhaps they see through the flaws and focus on our hearts. Hopefully, like this painting the good in us or what we represent is treasured, and perhaps these friendships are nurtured and displayed as treasures in this life, like this painting.
